Q: When do you start looking at the weights as heavy instead of a warm-up weight?
A: You never start looking at the weight you are lifting as heavy but, there is something called base and trigger weights. A base weight is something you know you should always be able to hit relatively comfortably and this number is determined by what kind of shape you are in. A trigger weight is something you have to start increasing your focus on. The closer you get to your personal record is when your mind aggressively switches and your focus increases on what you are doing. (Refer to chapter 12 to learn more about base and trigger weights).
As you are warming up practice moving the exact same way you need to be moving in order to lift a personal record for the day. Every attempt must mimic the way you did the previous attempt perfectly and your confidence is never shaken. Increase your aggression as you put more weight on the bar. Use this aggression as a way to get the idea of heavy out of your mind. Work on improving your base total because the higher this gets the more attempts you will be putting in at personal record/close to personal record attempts. The more attempts you are putting in at trigger weights (above your base numbers) the stronger you are getting. Never think of the lift as heavy. This is a sure way to psyche yourself out. Instead, practice consistently moving every attempt the exact same way and react to the bar faster and faster as the weights increase.

What the central governor tells us is that perception is a large part of performance. Most of the time, it’s better to stay cool and “just lift” instead of competing with the weights. Take your mind out of the process, listen to some soothing chillout tracks, and just do the thing.

Teh fukc ? M'aurait-on mensongé ?

Kinda rambling here. I don't really have an opinion on this. Either way, CNS burnout or naught, I think the only time anything is a problem is when someone who is too undertrained for a given physical task does more work than they are capable of handling.
A common issue I see is that people don't realize that the ability to recover is a trainable quality, just like maximal strength or force development. This is a big part of the so-called Westside method and the reasoning behind extra workouts and increasing work capacity.

Clean-style deadlift
Donny Shankle a écrit:Using both of those words together is a complete contradiction in principles.
The function of the pull in the clean is to keep the shoulders over the bar until the last moment possible in order to reach a completely finished position, which elongates the weightlifters body in order to put the bar high enough to get under. The stretch reflex in the hamstrings along with a conscious effort to move quickly propels the weightlifter under the bar.
The deadlift follows an exact opposite approach. I am a fan of deadlifting and find it to be a very enjoyable exercise when I get the chance to do them. However, the purpose while deadlifting once the bar has broken the floor is NOT to stay over the bar but to fall backward and get behind the bar. A "see-saw effect" is what is taking place while the hips are being pushed through.
You properly should find no meaning in the term for it holds no meaning. Some weightlifters strongly believe a deadlift to knee lockout while keeping the chest over the bar and the bar only coming off the floor a few inches helps develop isometric strength in the back. Yes it does develop iso strength but that has no correlation to the responsiveness required in the clean. Like I explained above staying over till the end which requires iso strength will give you greater potential to move under quickly but that is not all that moves you under the bar. If you want to practice moving you must move. Reaction is what is trained during a clean and this reaction does not take place in any variation of deadlifting or pulling. Cleaning alone is sufficient.
A weightlifter is a specifically trained athlete so the immediate understanding of how to properly get the shoulders behind the bar would be confusing at first. I have seen elite weightlifters deadlift to lockout while keeping their chest over the bar like a clean and to tell them otherwise is difficult, simply because of years of habitually doing otherwise. Eventually though like anything else the understanding of the movement would take place and any improvement would be dependent on how much training went into deadlifting. This is not to say a weightlifter could not lift unbelievable weights while using the principles he or she does comprehend in a clean.
Throwing a baseball fast for many years does not mean you will know how to throw a football, but when you do throw the football you certainly have the power required to throw it far.
The differences in the start of the pull for the clean and deadlift I will clarify in more detail in another post I have been working on.
Glenn Pendlay a écrit:I have to agree with Donny that clean and deadlift are two different things... different starting positions, different bar paths, and different body positions throughout the lift.
However, I have used the term. I use it to describe a lift that i dont use often but serves a purpose now and then... lifting a heavy weight off the ground attempting to do so with the same movement pattern as a clean till the bar gets just above the knee... then simply locking it out in whatever fashion.
Its a lift i dont advocate being done often. But as I said I have used it here and there. If I knew a different name to call it by i would. Because donny is right... the words clean and deadlift are not the same...
